This article on the rules of Shotgun certainly brought me back to my youth. For those who don't know, Shotgun is the method of indicating your desire to sit in the front passenger seat of a vehicle. The origins of the term are discussed here.
The article goes to great length to identify all possible situations that may occur in calling shotgun. Suprisingly, my old car posse stayed pretty close to these rules even though we'd never seen them! The girlfriend/girl friend rule was a particularily hated one by my single friends who were relegated to the back seat for an attractive young lass.

Rob, I appreciate your diligence in tracking down not only such thorough rules but also the origins of the term 'shotgun.' I don't recall the term being used when I was first a driver (early sixties) but I encountered it soon after while sharing rides with friends. You don't need to know any more than that.
